Employee Engagement, and how to successfully achieve it
According to ChatGPT, this what the definition and description of Employee Engagement is:
“Employee engagement is a term used to describe the level of commitment and involvement that employees have in their work. Engaged employees are those who are motivated, interested, and invested in their work, and who are willing to go above and beyond to achieve their goals and the goals of the organization.”
Introduction to Employee Engagement
So, here’s the thing.
Everybody talks about Employee Engagement and how the KPI needs to be tracked, controlled and improved, and I agree, however, at a ground level, what does that look and feel like?
There are so many ways to interpret one’s engagement in a company..or is that engagement TO a company..?
According to Forbes, Employee engagement is the emotional commitment the employee has to the organization and its goals. This emotional commitment means engaged employees actually care about their work and their company. They don’t work just for a pay cheque, or just for the next promotion, but work on behalf of the organization’s goal.
So, the question is..How do you physically deliver Employee Engagement in a company?
Why is Employee Engagement so important?
Much like any aspect of life, being actively participative in the task, role or job, leads to a higher likelihood of enjoyment and satisfaction.
By fostering a work environment that encourages and supports engagement, organizations can:
improve productivity
reduce turnover
create a positive work culture
How does one go about it?
There are several things that can be done to ensure higher levels of engagement among employees. Some of these include:
Identifying the factors that drive engagement
HR can conduct surveys, focus groups, or interviews with employees to identify the factors that contribute to engagement in the workplace. This can help to identify the specific needs and priorities of employees, and can inform the development of engagement strategies.
Providing opportunities for development and growth
HR can provide employees with opportunities for professional development and career growth, such as training, mentoring, and job rotation programs. This can help to keep employees engaged and motivated, and can support their personal and professional growth.
Creating a positive work culture
HR can work with leadership to create a work culture that is positive, inclusive, and supportive. This can include things like recognizing and rewarding employees for their contributions, providing a comfortable and safe work environment, and promoting open and honest communication.
Fostering a sense of belonging and connection
HR can help to foster a sense of belonging and connection among employees, by creating opportunities for social interaction and collaboration, and by promoting diversity and inclusion. This can help to build strong relationships and foster a sense of community within the organization.
But how do you implement actions to improve Employee Engagement?
These are the employee behaviours that correlate with improved Employee Engagement:
increased levels of commitment
feeling of involvement
feeling motivated
display interest in work
are invested in their work
are willing to go above and beyond
The question still remains, How do you physically deliver Employee Engagement in a company?
For someone to display the above list of behaviours, there needs to be a catalyst that generates those feelings that allow them to display certain behaviours.
The key is..the catalyst.
Some might say that this golden nugget is found in the culture of the company. Some might say that it is found in the HR initiatives.
I feel it’s a bit of both.
Nothing like the leader displaying all of those behaviours and leading by example. But it’s not just for the example of one leader. There are many leaders in a company and if the culture of the company is to have committed, motivated and passionate people in their business, well, it becomes contagious.
This culture, along with the physical HR initiatives such as CEO breakfasts, invitations to above-paygrade meetings etc..all work cohesively to help establish and maintain a great level of activities to foster and promote Employee Engagement over the long term.
